Tikun Olam

Tikun Olam is an important element of the Middle School experience. Each grade learns about a specific Jewish organization and comes up with ways to contribute to its cause.

Sixth Grade

Students in the 6th grade are learning about the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry. We want our students to better understand the situation of the Ethiopian Jews who are living in Israel as well as those who are still in Ethiopia . We have chosen this tzedakah for the sixth graders as we believe that they will be able to understand the differences between their own lives and those of the Ethiopian children. We hope that this knowledge will help to motivate our students to raise funds for our Ethiopian brothers and sisters.

Seventh Grade

Our 7th grade students are learning about an important organization that provides food for needy Jews in the United States: MAZON. Too often we are removed from these problems and do not realize that people in our own communities are going without sufficient food. We hope that this will create an awareness and greater understanding of the problem of hunger in America and the need for us to help others around us.

Eighth Grade

Eighth graders are learning about an entirely different kind of non-profit organization - one that is geared more to our spiritual needs than our physical needs: United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We want students to learn what the USCJ provides and why we, as Conservative Jews and members of the Solomon Schechter community, need to support the USCJ.

Each of the grades will participate in a tzedakah project to raise funds for their organization. We will also encourage students to give tzedakah each Friday at t'filah.
