FRIDAY LETTER

Parashat Lech Lecha

In the opening verses of God's command to Abram to leave Haran and travel to Canaan, we read that "they set out [vayetzu] for the land of Cannan, and they arrived [vayavoh-oo] in the land of Cannan."

This is a seemingly redundant statement. If Abram and his family arrived in Canaan, then isn't it obvious that he and his family left? Why the need for both statements?

One explanation is that the verse goes out of its way to mention that not only did Abram and his family leave, but they ACTUALLY made it. In other words, Abram completed the entire journey, starting at his birthplace of Haran all continuing all the way to the land of Canaan, the place God promised to him and his descendents.

Many of us start projects but do not finish them. Many of us set forth on journeys of discovery in life, in our careers and with loved ones but we do not complete them. All too often, we do not see the long-term picture or see things through to the end [I have written on similar themes over the past several weeks]. This is certainly true of Jewish life.

Sometimes we learn the most "along the way" - so once we begin the journey, we need to stick with it, we can't just skip over parts. Learning Hebrew or sacred texts is a perfect example. It takes years and years to master them; there are no short cuts to the end.

There is a unique opportunity to continue this journey over the next several weeks by attending our High School Open House on November 8th and the Middle School Open House in the evening on November 24th. I look forward to seeing all our current 5th and 8th grade students and their families at their respective Open House.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Moshe
