After-School Programs

Our Elementary School offers a number of extracurricular programs to meet the needs of our children. Each of these programs adds substantially to the formal curriculum offered in the classroom. So too, each of them provides children the opportunity to more fully develop their talent in a chosen area and a time to share with friends.

Sports Program for Grades 4 & 5

Children in grades four and five have the marvelous opportunity to participate in our after school Sports Program. The after school Sports Program gives youngsters the opportunity to engage in healthy sports competitions with a number of other local, private schools. Complete with team uniforms and "away" games, the children enjoy the program and learn their responsibility as a member of a team. It's truly wonderful to see the children cheering each other on - as we need just one more basket or one more goal as the buzzer is about to sound! The program fosters our children's growing physical abilities and their growing pride in their athletic accomplishments.

As dictated by league regulations, there are separate teams for boys and girls. The boys' teams are coached by Coach Alan Brent while Coach Scott Eliasoph coaches the girls' teams. The coaches create a warm, supportive atmosphere for the children. Seen as role models, the two coaches are exemplary leaders for our program.

There are four seasons to our sports year - soccer, basketball, floor hockey, and baseball. The program is a good way for children to learn the fundamentals of each sport, as well as to learn how to be part of a team. It's hard to describe the wonderful school spirit and pride student athletes feel with each game.

Band Program for Grades 3 - 5

Our after school Band Program enriches the school's music program. Open to children in third through fifth grade, the Band Program provides weekly instrumental lessons in a variety of wind and percussion instruments. For most of the children, this is their first serious encounter with musical instruments - an encounter that they find both exciting and challenging. The lessons are offered by professional musicians of the Paul Effman Company. Every Monday afternoon that school is in session, the children take lessons in small groups of three or four. The children put on two concerts during the year. Our experienced group performs in the winter concert and all children end their year with a spring concert. Following the concert for our parents, the children perform for our entire school - to rave reviews and enthusiastic applause!

Jewish Community Center Friday After-School Program

The JCC of Roslyn runs our Friday After School Program. Following the 1:30 dismissal, children stay in school to enjoy this club program. The club program offers classes in chess, karate, cooking, cartooning, and more. It's always wonderful to see children sharing this fun time with their friends. Who knows, maybe we have the next world chess champion or Nobel Prize political cartoonist or next Food Channel chef right here at Schechter! The program provides both a fun option for after school time, as well as meets the needs of parents due to the early dismissal.

Sunday Sports Program

Finally, our school also offers an exciting Sunday Sports Program for all Schechter children. The program is important to our school since it provides a Shomer Shabbat alternative to the Saturday town sports programs. Each of the teams is sponsored by a Schechter parent business. Many times, the entire family comes to the games to cheer on their children and friends. Every team is coached by a Schechter parent which adds a wonderful family feeling to the program. Following Schechter's own philosophy of balancing healthy competition with respect for others, the program has grown in popularity every year. We urge you to come and watch the program in action - and you'll see the wonderful excitement of a parent-led program for our children. Go team!
