We are excited to announce that we are starting our sixth year in partnership with the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center (SJJCC) to receive “Shinshinim” – Israeli High School graduates who will spend their gap year with us before they commence their mandatory military service in Israel.   The Shinshinim light up our school and bring Israel so much closer to our students and we are thrilled to begin again each fall.

The Shinshinim program’s mission is to bring Israel closer to Jewish communities on Long Island, to foster cross-cultural understanding, as well as nurture interest in love of and pride in Israel, particularly for our youth. Israel is integrated into the vision, mission, culture and programming of partner institutions. This program has been highly successful in Toronto for many years, and more recently, in Connecticut and Brooklyn.  Long Island, with literally thousands of Jewish residents, welcomed its first two Shinshinim for the 2015-2016 academic year. Two amazing and creative Israeli youths had meaningful encounters with a cross-section of the Long Island Jewish community at large through the program’s partnerships with ten pioneer institutions: Synagogues, Jewish Community Centers, religious schools and the Long Island chapter of Tzofim, the Israeli Scouts.

Host families are an important component of this program. They provide a private living space, emotional support and inclusion in the family’s daily life and activities, including daily, and especially, Shabbat meals together.  The Shinshinim program fully covers the cost of insured automobiles, gasoline, medical insurance, a clothing allowance and other stipends. The host family provides food and family meals and is enabled to enjoy a rich cultural exchange with its new family member from Israel.

Host families in other Shinshin programs report a mutually rewarding experience, as well as close friendships that endured long after their Shinshinim have returned to Israel. Our own host families in 2015-2016 also enjoyed their experiences. Three Schechter families hosted during this year: The Kohler’s, Willen’s and Davis-Levine’s.
